Tourism Adventure Media Advisory – Oct. 8-21

 

 

Cornfield Maize: Through Oct. 28, Milton.

Have a hauntingly good time wondering through maize this Halloween season. In its seventh year, this corn maze is open to the public on weekends and for individual and group reservations through the week. Black Walnut Festival: Oct. 11-14, Spencer.

This festival, which began in 1954, celebrates the abundant black walnut harvest. Visitors can buy handmade arts and crafts, watch agricultural and livestock competitions, hop on a carnival ride, join in a dance and sample local food. Taste of Our Towns Festival: Oct. 13, Lewisburg.

Scheduled during the most colorful time of the year, Taste of our Towns (TOOT) is a fall favorite in West Virginia! Please the palate with great foods including baked goods, crab cake sandwiches, barbeque and more. Enjoy foods from Appalachia as well as specialties from The Greenbrier and Tamarack. Mansion by Candlelight: Oct. 12-13, Parkersburg.

For two nights only! Sternwheeler rides will transport you back to the year 1805 where the Blennerhassetts are hosting a party on the island. On this autumn evening, electricity is banished when the mansion and island are transformed into the flame-lit world of the 18th century. The soft glow of candlelight will weave a mesmerizing spell around visitors as they listen to music, see dancing, or watch a lively game of cards. Boo at the Zoo: Oct. 18-21, Wheeling.

Participants receive bags at the door, and are invited to visit various stations throughout the zoo, each with a tasty Halloween treat. A spooky train ride is the highlight. Don’t miss this special opportunity to dress up and visit the zoo after dark! 24th Annual Lumberjackin’ Bluegrassin’ Jamboree: Oct. 12-14, Mullens.

A family-oriented event, this festival has something for everyone and features a woodsman competition, bluegrass music, Appalachian clogging and a variety of arts and crafts by area residents. New River Gorge Bridge Day Festival: Oct. 20, New River Gorge.

Considered the largest one-day festival in West Virginia, this is the only time pedestrians can walk across the New River Gorge Bridge, the world's second longest single arch bridge. Hundreds of BASE jumpers and nearly 200,000 spectators are expected to attend this year's Bridge Day. The New River Gorge Bridge, at 876 feet tall, serves as the launch point for six hours (from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) of safe, legal BASE jumps.
