New guide shows off West Virginia’s golf courses

SOUTH CHARLESTON , WV – From north to south, east to west, tee to green, the 2007 Official West Virginia Golf Guide provides detailed information about West Virginia’s golf courses.

A collaborative project of the West Virginia Division of Tourism and Miles Media Group publishing company, the 32-page, full-color publication is a must for any golfer (or hacker) needing information about the state’s many diverse courses designed by some of the most famous names in the sport. The guide includes regional maps and grids showing the location, contact information and course details for more than 100 golf courses, clubs and resorts statewide. The Golf Guide is free and can be obtained by contacting the state tourism office at 1-800-CALLWVA or www.wvtourism.com.

Notable golf courses featured in the book includes Oakhurst Links, America’s first organized golf club, established in 1884, and where players today still use hickory clubs, hit gutta percha golf balls off sand tees and grazing sheep are the fairways “groundskeepers.”

There are also features about some of the state’s best mountain and valley courses and those which offer a combination of both. Be sure to read the “Beyond the Links” story for great ideas about combining other outdoor activities around the state with a golf trip.

Miles Media, which produced the Division of Tourism’s official travel guide, published the ad-supported Golf Guide at no cost to the agency.
