The Gillum House
can provide routings to see nine of the remaining covered bridges
in West Virginia. Trips include visits to hand-blown glass factories,
artisan craft shops, and historic sites.

Driving Day Trip Tours from Shinnston

Trip
#1 – Go north and cross the hills to U.S. Rte. 250 and
on the way to the Ohio River via a glorious fall color route,
where you will see two covered bridges. Stop in Moundsville
to tour the former state penitentiary. Go north on West Virginia
Rte. 2 to Wheeling to see the Wheeling Suspension Bridge and
visit beautiful Oglebay Resort. Return to Shinnston via I-70
east to I-79 south.

Trip
#2 – Take U.S. Rte. 50 east to U.S. Rte. 250 south.
Visit Mother's Day founder's Anna Jarvis House in Webster.
Continue on Rte. 250 to the Philippi Covered Bridge and the
historic town of Philippi. Return across the covered bridge
to go south on U.S. Rte. 119 to West Virginia Rte. 20 and
follow Rte. 20 south to the West Virginia Wildlife Center.
The bargain price entrance fee to the state-operated center
gets visitors a wonderful stroll along a ¼-mile trail
through the woods to see a number of fascinating animals indigenous
to West Virginia. WV Rte. 20 north will return to Shinnston.

Trip
#3 – Take U.S. Rte. 50 east to Grafton and visit wonderful
Tygart Lake State Park. Lunch at the lodge while enjoying
the view of the foliage and the lake. Then take Rte. 50 west
to West Virginia Rte. 310 north and visit Valley Falls State
Park. Walk the trails along the Tygart Valley River, taking
in the clear water flowing over the rocks and the impressive
falls with a spectacular fall foliage backdrop. Return to
WV Rte. 30-10 north and visit Coal Country just as you enter
Fairmont. Coal Country Miniature Golf uses mine equipment
for the holes and explains how the equipment was used in the
mines. State Rte. 310 takes you to U.S. Rte. 19 south to return
to Shinnston.
