From world-class resorts to rustic camping on rail trails
Aug. 19, 2004
Who Needs New England?
Greenbrier County is one of the most scenic mountain and valley regions you’ll
find anywhere in the eastern United States. Opportunities for viewing incredible
bursts of fall color await as you casually wind your way down an old country
road. Self-guided driving tour brochures are perfect for finding that hidden
away cave or historic treasure, available at the Greenbrier County Visitors
Center in Lewisburg.
For most, a weekend stay in Greenbrier County would include a night or two at one of our quaint bed and breakfasts or a charming county inn. After a drive, visitors often spend some time in our downtown areas lined with unique shops, art galleries and antique stores including our newest, Harmony Ridge Gallery. Then top off the day with a relaxing dinner at some of West Virginia’s best restaurants. Four area restaurants including the world famous resort The Greenbrier, the General Lewis Inn, Food and Friends, and the Moxie Café in Union, were recently featured on the Food Network’s “Best of…” series for dining excellence.
Greenbrier River Trail is Hiker/Biker Heaven
The Greenbrier Trial is a 76-mile stretch that was once part of the C&O
railroad and has now been converted into the West Virginia’s longest hiking
and biking trail.
The trail winds its way through some incredibly beautiful countryside along
the Greenbrier River starting at North Caldwell and end one mile south of
Cass Scenic Railroad State Park. The Greenbrier River Trail offers something
for just about every outdoor enthusiast including hiking, biking, horseback
riding, fishing and cross-county skiing.
Cabins and cottages are available at four state parks adjacent to the trail and there are also primitive campsites along the trail. Greenbrier River Trail was recently named by Backpacker Magazine as one of the top 10 hiking trails in the United States.
